FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 23rd, 2023

Casper, WY – Independence League Baseball, one of the premier summer collegiate leagues in North America, today announced the relocation of the Canyon County Spuds organization from Caldwell, Idaho, to Casper, Wyoming. The re-named Casper Spuds will play at Mike Lansing Field beginning in May 2023.

Team owner and Spuds founder Jeff Dobish could not be more excited about the move and plans to bring a renewed culture of baseball to the city of Casper. “We’re not going to wait for the city of Casper to accept us.We’re going to come to town and work our butts off to prove our commitment to this community,” Dobish said. “It’s about baseball but even more so about getting the people of Casper, especially the town’s youth and their families, engaged and out on the town by providing exciting, affordable family fun and something they can be proud of.”

The Casper Spuds will join the Badlands Big Sticks (Dickinson, ND), Fremont Moo (Fremont, NE), Hastings Sodbusters (Hastings, NE), Oahe Zap (Pierre, SD), Spearfish Sasquatch (Spearfish, SD) and Nebraska Prospects (Travel Team) for the 2023 Independence League Baseball season.

Independence League Baseball is a summer collegiate wood bat baseball league comprised of franchises dedicated to being active stewards of their respective communities, vowing to work cooperatively to provide the very best experience for fans, players, coaches and staff. Each organization is operated with professionalism and integrity, promising to keep the fan and player experience at the top of mind all day, every day.

Fans can expect to experience affordable, family-friendly entertainment that additionally provides opportunities to collegiate baseball players from throughout the country to develop and hone their skills as they pursue their ultimate goals of playing professional baseball. Independence League Baseball teams will play a schedule consisting of 57 regular season games, in addition to playoffs to determine a league champion, from late May through early August.

Dobish hopes to ingrain the Spuds into the fabric of the Casper community and encourages people of all ages to buy into the club and become part of the team. “We want to make Spuds baseball a part of people’s lives, a part of the town’s culture, and a part of their growing up so people can proudly say ‘I’ve been going to Spuds games for fifteen years; this is just what we do in Casper,” Dobish said. “We’re also going to go old school and intend to acknowledge the history and traditions of Casper baseball that preceded us.”

The move from Idaho to Wyoming also brings substantial ownership changes, as Dobish has brought on as partners local businesspeople Paul and Kristi Hack, Colorado businessman Brad Nemzer, and experienced operator and Wyoming resident Matthew Snyder, who will serve as the team’s General Manager. “Having local and experienced businesspeople as partners in the Spuds ownership group is critical to our success in Casper,” states Dobish. “Operating such a relationship-based business is extremely challenging to be done successfully from hundreds of miles away.”

Casper was selected among a number of markets evaluated by the Spuds ownership group and represents a key strategic location within the league’s geographical footprint. “Casper offers an attractive mix of location, facility quality, and support from municipal and local business leaders that we believe are key elements to success in establishing, growing, and maintaining a meaningful and long-lasting relationship with the people of this region,” said Dobish. “We are thrilled to be in Wyoming and are truly humbled by the support we have already begun to receive from the community.”
